Abstracts
Sexually explicit material (SEM) is any material that is showcasing genitalia with
an intention of sexual arousal or stimulating imagination through various depictions of
sexual acts. Frequent use of such material is often linked with risky sexual behaviour
(sexual intercourse under the influence of drugs, casual sexual intercourse) and attitudes
(sexually permissive attitudes, sexual activities and intimate relations attitudes).
Therefore, the aim of this study was to examine the relation between usage of sexually
explicit material and risky sexual behaviour (earlier age of first sexual intercourse, use
of condoms in most sexual relationships, sexual intercourse with an unknown person).
The survey involved 58 male and 85 female students (average age 20.78 years). Participants
filled out a sexual risk behaviour survey and scale of sexual attitudes, followed
by questions about the use of SEM. The results have shown that there is a significant
difference in frequency and types of SEM usage. Male participants were using SEM
more often, as well as using more online videos and images. Furthermore, they were
exposed to SEM at younger ages. Results have also shown that female participants
were less likely to engage in risky sexual activities and sexually permissive attitudes.
Positive correlation in frequent usage of SEM and risky sexual behaviour was established
when it comes to women, meaning that women who use SEM frequently were
more likely to engage in risky sexual behaviour. Finally, there was a positive correlation
between frequent SEM usage and sexually permissive attitudes in both male and
female participants.
